The Byrne family are proud to announce their win in the small to medium business category of the
SAWIA Environmental Excellence Awards 2013 announced earlier today.
With the theme of this year’s awards being ‘WATER’
we are exceptionally proud to even be finalists
in a category with such great environmental impact.
The Award – Byrne Vineyards – for a water efficiency program the included and upgrade of on-farm vineyard irrigation infrastructure for monitoring and distribution of irrigation water, enabling changes in irrigation management practise that has resulted in significant water savings of which 75% was returned to the environment.
The Byrne family vineyard property of Scotts Creek is located 5km south of Morgan on the banks of the river Murray. It is a significant viticultural and natural label us property, with 282 hectares under vine, 450 hectares of heritage native scrub and associated 435 hectares of natural wetlands.
The vineyard was originally planted by Max Schubert in 1970, as the location was recognised for its potential in producing premium quality grapes. The Byrne family acquired the property in 1999 and have made significant improvements in terms of vineyard water efficiency.
This award recognises and celebrates the achievements and innovations of SAWIA members,
in good environment practice, and provide leadership and inspiration to continually improve our properties.
With the success of this project we are now planning stage 2 of our water efficiency project
at our Overland Vineyard property near Waikerie in 2013/14 which has 78 hectares under vine.
